Social media and Brexit. The morning of 24 June 2016 will be going down in history as one of those days that you will remember for the rest of your life. Like the death of Lady Diana, or 9-11. Days during which you remember exactly what you were doing when the events unfolded. For me, the morning of 24 June 2016 will go down in memory as the day that Britain betrayed their future generations. It is clear that the older generations in the UK have swung the balance to Brexit and the expense of the younger generation. And the younger generation is left with clearing up the mess caused by their elders. Here’s a stat that says it all:

brexit

So what is the legacy the older generation will leave behind? What do they leave behind that the leaders of tomorrow have to fix? Go to #brexitin5words and #NotinMyname on twitter to find out. Two hashtags used by the younger generation to vent their anger:

  • #NotInMyName people older than me massively reducing the opportunities for people younger than me. #IVotedRemain
  • Our country’s fate has been decided by people longing for a past that never existed, & they’ve created a future that’s bleak #NotInMyName
  • Absolutely devastated. Fear and ignorance has won over tolerance and unity. This result doesn’t speak for me. #NotInMyName
  • The future of this country has been decided by those that won’t even be here to live with the consequences. What a mess. #NotInMyName

  • We thought Americans were stupid #BrexitIn5Words
  • Way to screw Young Generation ! #BrexitIn5Words
  • #BrexitIn5Words Worst present from Grandma ever!

The campaigns from Brexit and Bremain was a campaign filled with fear. Focussing heavily on migration and armageddon when Brexit would win. It diverted people away from the EU benefits of free trade, open borders and globalisation. In stead of a “glass is half full” approach of fixing the problems with the other EU partners, the campaigns were loaded with “glass is half empty” arguments. So people actually didn’t vote for being in the EU or not, but they voted for taking back the borders and stopping immigrants coming into the country. This was reflected by the Google Search trends when it became clear that Brexit had won: “What is the EU?” was the second top question on the EU since the results were officially announced. That says it all doesn’t it?
